CitySafe

The London CITIZENS CitySafe Campaign builds the power of local communities to tackle crime and the fear of crime. Where it comes from? CitySafe is now top of the London CITIZENS agenda. Over the last 18 months, 10 young people from London CITIZENS member groups have been murdered on the streets of the capital. After 6 months of Mayoral Election 2008 Listening Campaign, London CITIZENS voted CitySafe number one priority in March 2008 at the Delegates Assembly. The CitySafe approach has been developed through conversation and research involving hundreds of young people, youth workers, teachers and community leaders. At the heart of this process has been the voice of young people saying we are not the problem, we are the solution. What we plan to do? We are building CitySafe Partnerships organisations in Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Kensington. Local clusters of schools, faith communities and charities are reclaiming the streets from crime, addressing local problems of crime with innovative action. While CitySafe Neighborhood organisations are working closely with the Police, the Council and business, they are not afraid to make a powerful challenge. We have plans for a CitySafe Youth Games pilot in 2010 which we plan to roll out in 2011, so watch this space! CitySafe is supported by Vernon Coaker MP, Minister for Crime Reduction; Boris Johnson, Mayor of London; Nick Bracken, Met Police Borough Commander of Newham; and many other leaders from different sectors. Most importantly it is supported by the 140 member schools, churches, mosques, trade unions, universities and charities that make up the London CITIZENS alliance.
