Stephen Timms MP East Ham

Newham CitySafe Partnership launched!

“I have long been a supporter of the London Citizens group, and I fully support the work that Newham’s CitySafe has done and will do to promote a community-led solution to youth violence. It is excellent to see that contrary to much of the media coverage, most of our young people are more interested in preventing violent crime than committing it. I hope that this will be the first of many such CitySafe Havens in Stratford."

Christina Onaolape TELCO Leader St. Angela's & St. Bonaventure's Sixth Form College

The contribution and leadership of young people on CitySafe in Newham is key to it's success. I am proud to be a part of this generation of proactive young leaders who have shown courage in being part of the solution to the problem of crime and violence among young people

Paul Leslie Director, The Hartley Centre

“The Renewal Programme is committed to working with young people and families across Newham; CitySafe is an excellent example of what young people and a partnership between business, statutory and third sector organisations can achieve when working together, and reflects both the concerns of young people and the move towards identifying sustainable solutions for the future. I am happy to be a part of this proactive partnership."

On Friday 30th October, young people from Eastside Young Leaders Academy, Forest Gate; St. Angela’s and St. Bonaventure’s Sixth Form College, Forest Gate; and Shpresa Programme, Canning Town led the launch of the TELCO Newham CitySafe Partnership. The CitySafe Partnership is an alliance of organisations and businesses which have committed to working together on the CitySafe campaign to make Newham safer for all and has the support of the Metropolitan Police.

The Newham CitySafe Partnership comes as a result of on-going leadership and relationship-building with young people putting themselves forward as part of the solution to youth violence. Supported by the Police and local Safer Neighbourhoods Teams, young people from Newham have been involved in the CitySafe Haven Scheme, signing up local businesses, places of worship and civic buildings to take responsibility for safety and building relationships within their local communities. Over 50 shops have signed up to be CitySafe Havens on Green Street and Upton Lane with more to come on Barking Road and Plashet Road.

Ray Lewis, Director of Eastside Young Leaders Academy, led statements of support. Speakers included other leaders from London Citizens and key contributors to the campaign - Chief Inspector Gary Brown, Youth and Neighbourhood Policing for Newham, who with Sergeant Bob Dubar, has been instrumental on CitySafe in Newham. Jimmy Curtis, Community Affairs Manager, Starbucks Coffee Company UK and Ireland; Paul Leslie, Director of the Hartley Centre and Ladi Martins, Store Manager of Peacocks Stratford committed to working together to make Newham safer for all through the Partnership. Stephen Timms MP commended the young people for taking responsibility for the safety of their communities in Newham.
